Summer programs are vital for young people with disabilities, offering valuable skill-building opportunities, social interaction, and career exploration. Boone Center, Inc. (BCI) recognizes the importance of these programs and this summer was fortunate to offer two impactful initiatives: the Summer Manufacturing Camp and the Summer Work Experience Program.
Summer Manufacturing Camp: Building Confidence and Interest
BCI’s four-week Summer Manufacturing Camp, funded by a generous grant from Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs, the charitable foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, introduces high school freshmen and sophomores to the world of manufacturing through hands-on experiences. Participants learn about various manufacturing processes, safety protocols, and teamwork. Engaging in practical activities both in the classroom and at local manufacturing firms, they gain confidence in their abilities and discover new interests. The 2024 camp, which kicked off on July 15th with 12 campers, is designed to inspire a new generation of skilled workers.
Summer Work Experience Program: First Steps Towards a Career
For older students, BCI’s six-week paid Summer Work Program offered through Vocational Rehabilitation often provides the first job experience for high school juniors and seniors. Students work Monday through Friday at participating businesses with the support of a dedicated Job Coach. This exposure is invaluable in helping students understand their strengths, preferences, and areas for improvement. As they navigate various tasks and interact with coworkers, they develop a clearer sense of their career aspirations and the steps needed to achieve them. It is especially exciting when summer workers receive job offers to keep working after the program ends. So far, this has happened to two of our summer students, and we couldn’t be happier for them!
Fostering Independence and Social Skills
Both of these summer programs emphasize fostering independence and social skills. Participants learn to advocate for themselves, navigate workplace dynamics, and build relationships. These experiences are instrumental in preparing them for future employment and integration into the local workforce. By providing a supportive environment, BCI ensures that young people with disabilities feel encouraged and empowered throughout their journey.
Building Brighter Futures
BCI’s summer programs for young people are not just about work—they are about building brighter futures and fostering a sense of purpose and belonging. Through the Summer Manufacturing Camp and the Summer Work Experience Program, BCI helps participants make informed decisions about their futures and equips them with the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
